Demystifying the Craft: Understanding Gin Distillation

Gin is more than just a trendy spirit; it’s the result of a complex, time-honored process known as distillation.

To truly appreciate the intricacies of a distillery tour, a basic understanding of this process is crucial.

The creation of gin involves multiple steps:

Step 1: Fermentation

This is the first stage in which yeast converts sugars (usually from grains) into alcohol.

The result is a low-proof alcohol, often referred to as “wash.”

Step 2: Distillation

The wash is then distilled, typically in a copper still. During distillation, the alcohol is heated until it turns into vapor.

As it cools and condenses, it becomes a high-proof spirit.

Step 3: Flavor Infusion

This is where gin truly becomes gin.

The distilled spirit is infused with various botanicals, the most crucial being juniper berries.

This gives gin its distinctive flavor.

Step 4: Dilution

Finally, the gin is diluted with water to bring it down to its final proof.

This makes the gin more palatable and ready for bottling.
